libvirt and QEMU, together with the KVM hypervisor built into the Linux kernel, provide a complete virtualisation platform. It is the technology behind most of the world’s cloud infrastructure, including the major public clouds, and it is entirely open source.
The VMware alternative
VMware has long been the default for enterprise virtualisation, but its licensing costs are substantial and rising. libvirt/QEMU/KVM provides the same capabilities (live migration, snapshots, high availability, resource management) without per-socket licensing fees. Your virtualisation infrastructure costs what the hardware costs, nothing more.
Mature and proven
This is not experimental technology. KVM is the hypervisor used by Google Cloud, AWS (for many workloads), and countless hosting providers. libvirt provides a stable management API that tools like virt-manager, oVirt, and Proxmox build on. The ecosystem is deep and mature.
